6 Ways You Can Become The Boss And Overcome An Eating Disorder || Dunnebells

Overcoming an eating disorder by yourself can be hard. However, it isn't an impossible task! I lost 65lbs and overcame a binge eating disorder, so trust me when I say this. If you are determined enough to do it, you can get past it and develop a healthier, better lifestyle for yourself! Are you wondering how to begin with it? Here are six ways to help you overcome an eating disorder and develop some self-love that is required.

1. TALK TO SOMEONE WHO HAS RECOVERED FROM AN EATING DISORDER

Talking to someone who has been through what you are going through will help you move in the right direction towards recovery. He/she will understand your emotions and will make you feel supported in what you are dealing with. Also, you can always gather a few tips and methods used by someone who has successfully overcome the disorder and try them out yourself! When I was in recovery, surrounding myself with others who had overcome their disorder was really helpful. I found these people on Instagram, so you don’t need to know these people in real life, don’t worry.

2. VIEW FOOD AS FUEL

Developing a hatred for food isn’t the solution to overcoming your disorder. Remember that! To remain healthy and have a nutritious lifestyle, you need to eat good food. You need to understand that food is a fuel, a healthy medicine that drives our bodies. Thus, start viewing your food as a special thing, something that you need for your body. Stop hating the thought of it forcefully! Food can heal, you just have to allow it to do so.

3. EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY, ALWAYS

Don’t stress yourself or restrain yourself too much by listening to what people have to say about your disorder. Nobody understands your body better than you! It is okay to feel hungry and when certain food does not curb your appetite it is okay to eat more. However, you will have to learn how to know when to stop eating. Once you can master this, you can overcome your eating disorder! You will learn to trust your body and eat when you are hungry, stopping when you are full. It takes work. Train your brain slowly and adapt to better habits gradually. Don't be too harsh on your body!

4. TALK TO YOURSELF LIKE YOU ARE TALKING TO YOUR BEST FRIEND

Talking to yourself like a dear friend and treating yourself with love is really essential. It is important to understand that your thoughts turn into words, and then, these words determine your actions. Thus, opting for positive affirmations to come out of an eating disorder would be a great idea. Make sure your inner voice is polite, positive, and loving.

5. LEARN HOW TO COPE WITH STRESS

Learn to manage your stress levels correctly. Being stressed results in bad decisions and can be very triggering when it comes to eating disorders. Thus, you need to learn how to deal with stress positively and manage yourself. You can’t avoid it. Stress is going to happen and trying to fight it vs. control it can be a slippery slope that you never overcome. Instead, come up with ways to manage stress healthily. For example, you could sign up for some regular yoga and/or meditation to maintain peace of mind and remain healthy. Just a few times a week will make a huge difference.

6. RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN (AND YOUR HABITS)

To overcome an eating disorder, you need to retrain your body as well as brain to stop feeling that way. You need to tell your brain that you are healthy and that you don't suffer from any disorder. Train your brain in such a way that it feels that you have the potential of becoming healthy again. Also, you may need to change your habits and lifestyle a bit. A few simple things you can do are: exercise well (don’t overdo it) eat nutrient-dense foods and do your best to start your day with positivity.

If you want to start on a clean slate and you are doing some sort of cleanse, my recommendation is to avoid that and detox your body more naturally with water and sleep and healthy unprocessed foods. Either way, you can learn more about 6 of the best workouts to do during a cleanse here and start afresh!

The first step to overcoming an eating disorder is to believe in yourself, try out ways to a healthier living and feeling good about it! Change your way of thinking, and that would make it better for you!
