How to Design the Perfect Workplace for Your Small Business

Let’s dive right in and talk productivity! As the founder of Dunnebells, a 6 figure entrepreneur this is the first time i’ve had my very own office and let me tell you, creating the workplace of your dreams is crucial!

When I first started Dunnebells I was a member of a coworking space which was fantastic, when I went, and when I didn’t go? Well guess what, I was slumped on the couch, laptop in my lap trying to get stuff done. it wasn’t working.

Fast forward through many years of living a nomadic lifestyle where I didn’t have a home, let alone an office, to now where we have moved into a house where I have this entire space built out the exact way I want it, including my sit/stand desk, YAY!

creating the perfect workplace for small business

Enough about me, let’s take a look and see what advice we can give so you can create the ideal workspace for your small business!

Prioritize Functionality and Ergonomics

Make sure you and employees if you have them can work comfortably and efficiently. This entails offering cozy seating, suitable lighting, and enough space for storage and movement. You want people to be comfortable and at ease when they’re in your workplace, and that all comes down to the way in which you structure it and the furniture you choose. So definitely try to keep the ergonomics of your choices in mind.

If you have money in the budget, you could also consider a space for team exercise. For instance, you could set up a small baseball pitch outside your office and then use a baseball lineup card to encourage people to take part. This is a great way to keep people moving in their spare time when they are not working and bring the group together as a real team.

Encourage Close Collaboration

To get things done, small businesses frequently rely on cooperation and teamwork. Create open work areas where your team can collaborate as well as spaces for unofficial meetings and brainstorming sessions in your location layout to support this. The furniture and layout you need in the workplace will have an impact on how easy it is for your team to collaborate. LOC Scientific can help you with finding the right furniture for that. If you have a virtual team, consider organizing some team building activies that improve communication. Effective communication is the key to improve remote team collaboration.

Create a Community Atmosphere in the Workplace

By providing communal areas like a break room or lounge area, you can foster a sense of community in your workplace. Employee relationships and a sense of belonging will grow as a result of this. Employee performance will improve as a result and your business will only benefit from that. Of course, this goes beyond your design choices, but that’s where you can start. Again, if you have a virtual team consider creating digital rooms where people can hang out, as if they were on a break together. You can also explore the idea of a workplace chaplain. The benefits of workplace chaplains are endless, and it could be just what you need to bring people together.

Incorporate Some Natural Elements

By incorporating natural elements into your office design, you can bring the outside in. This can include vegetation, natural lighting, and organic components like wood or stone. These little changes really can make a big difference to the atmosphere inside your business.

Make it Reflect the Company Culture

Your company's culture and values should be reflected in your office design. Incorporating branding elements, displaying company mission statements or values, and creating an environment that supports your company's goals and objectives are a few examples of how to do this.

Try to Stick to a Budget

Be mindful of your office design budget. Consider cost-effective solutions for other elements while giving top priority to the most crucial ones, such as functionality and ergonomics. There are lots of ways to really enhance your workplace without having to spend a small fortune, so don’t feel like you need to do that. Cost-effective solutions are usually the best ones.

You can design an office environment that is practical, collaborative and represents the culture of your business by using the advice in this article. This will support the expansion of your small business and help to foster a supportive and effective work environment for your employees. What’s most important is that your workplace aids the important work you do.

Like I said, it’s been over 7 years since I have had my very own office and I can’t explain the amount of joy and happiness I get when I come into this space because it has been created using some of the tips above! Most importantly, it’s never going to be “finished”. Don’t feel as though it is a project that has to be completed. Instead, allow it to take time and build it step by step. Add things in over the years and truly make the perfect workplace for your small business!
